Learn to do tailgating the Cajun way.... Soileau style. When you mix happy, two-step sounds of Cajun music with the sounds of horses running and people cheering, along with lots of food and plenty of fun, you have the original Soileau tailgate party. All of this happens bimonthly at the Metro Soileau Downs. The track is located 7 miles east of Oberlin on LA. Coushatta Indian Tribe
Reservation and Museum

 

The Coushatta Indian Museum is located on the Tribal Reservation land next to Elton, LA. in Allen Parish. The museum consist mainly of Coushatta artifacts, but also has different items of interest from various Indian Tribes across the United States. The Coushatta Tribe is mainly known for their beautiful pine needle baskets which are on display in numerous shapes and sizes and are a highlight in the museum. Tours of the facility explaining the colorful history of the Coushatta people are available for individuals or groups upon request. The museum is open Monday through Thursday 9:00 A.M. until 12:00 noon and from 1:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. and on Fridays from 9:00 A.M. to 12:00 noon. Visitors are invited to witness Native American dancers, in full colorful regalia, from all over the U.S.  including Canada, coming together for the Coushatta Pow – Wow Celebration. Native American arts and crafts, & food booths are available. Porcupine Head Roaches, Eagle Feathers, Native American songs, Women’s Traditional and  Men’s Fancy are all ingredients of the Coushatta Pow-Wow. This event is open to the Public. Come and enjoy the many flavors of the Coushatta culture. The Pow – Wow is held during the month of October in Kinder, Louisiana.
Camp Coushatta Day Camp is held at the Coushatta Tribe Reservation 3 miles north of Elton, LA. This is a unique hands on experience where the traditions, customs, and culture of the Coushatta's are shared by the children of other cultures, helping them acquire a clearer understanding of the Coushatta Tribe. Although camp is geared toward youth ages 6 through 12, it can be a wonderful family experience. The camp includes a cooking demonstration, basketry, drum making, a weapons and tools display, jewelry making and nature station. Visitors can also enjoy a canoe ride, games of tomahawk throwing and archery, a spear throwing contest and story telling. Our tepee demonstration is enjoyed by visitors of all ages. Operating hours are from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon Tuesdays, Wednesdays,  from the second week in June through the third week in July.
